More About Annotation

Annotation is a conversation the reader has with the text in order to find meaning, to understand purpose, and to gain knowledge.

Color-coding with commentary (thoughts, questions responses) and symbols.

Annotation is a necessary skill to master because you are in partnership with the text.  It is through this method you will show your learning and understanding either orally or through your writing.

Reading, Logging, Annotation

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE YOUR BOOK AND YOUR READING JOURNAL

Today you will have 1/2 hour to read and to journal - during this time I will come around and
take a look at the work you are doing in your journals.  Your goals should include:

Identifying character traits and how their decisions and actions affect the story
and
Identifying major conflicts that drive the story forward.

Be sure to write down QUOTES, write down pages # when interesting events or
conflicts happen and any other evidence you feel is important.

And, DON'T FORGET YOUR THINKING.

WE will also review BASIC ESSAY FORMATTING
AND
Finish annotating the Toxic Worm article INCLUDING a
short written statement about the impact of the text.
So, this is not a summary, it is your thoughts about the
information the text has provided.

Wednesday, August 17, 2016

Hello and happy Friday!

Today is all about books and reading.

1.     The first thing you will do is carefully fill out a READING PROFILE! This is an important document that will help you understand your reading habits.

2.    After that, we will have a MINI-BOOK TALK where a reader will volunteer to tell us why they like (or did not like) the last book they read.

3.  Begin to put together our library (you will need your computers for this)

If you have your most recently read book cover, please write your name on it and tack it to the reading board.  YOU SHOULD HAVE YOUR COVER UP BY THE END OF THE WEEK!

TODAY in blocks H and F, we will:

1. BRAINSTORM: WHAT ARE THE ELEMENTS OF GOOD WRITING?  Make sure you have your English notebooks to write down our ideas:

2.  PROMPT DRIVEN WRITING:  Choose 1 of the following prompts written below and write a well structured short essay addressing the prompt. Use what you know about good writing to help you compose your response.

           -  If you were a king or a queen, what do you think is the most important role a monarch plays in people's lives?

           - When teenagers graduate from high school they should be required to serve   in the military for two years.

           - What is love?

           - Imagine that you fell down a mine shaft with nothing more than a pair of   extra socks, some dental floss, a mini-flashlight, a bag of pretzels, and a set of         keys. You managed to survive for two days and then freed yourself.  Now, tell the story of how you escaped.
