Sample Essay

Sample essay

Topic: ASD
When we’re putting together an essay, we need to have extremely important information. Thesis/theme – big idea. What impression do I want to leave?

First paragraph:
Hook or grabber
Thesis statement (a broad statement about ASD)
What I’m going to tell you about ASD.
My evidence.
Transition into your second paragraph.

Paragraph 2:
Topic sentence (ideas, evidence)
Details.
Five to eight pieces of evidence.
7-9 sentences.
Transition to conclusion.

Conclusion:
Hardest thing to write.
Be a recap, paraphrase your thesis sentence and idea. Don’t say the exact same thing, because it will bore me. And you don’t want to.
Add your personality. Your opinion on it. Only after you’ve proved your point can you add your personality to it.

The Hottest School in the World

The American School of Doha, home of the dragons, is the hottest in the Middle Eastern desert. I go to school there and I know that it provides students with a great education. In addition to having lots of activities and resources, ASD has a diverse, friendly, multicultural student body. Out of all the schools that I have attended, this school, located in the smallest, oil-rich country in the world, had the most impact on my life.
“ASD is awesome.”
Almost everyone I know says so. With over twenty different after school activities available, sometimes it’s hard to choose which one to participate in every week. For instance, drama, reading groups, sports, Academic Games are all activities we can choose. I learn new, interesting things everyday and my grades have gone up because I love what I’m learning. And can you believe it, ASD provides every student with a laptop. Seventy-four different countries and cultures are represented by the students. All are positive, active global citizens. Because ASD has so many wonderful aspects it is definitely one of the greatest school I have ever attended.
ASD has had a great and significant impact on my life. I’ve been introduced to many new different things, people, cultures, and that’s why ASD will never leave my heart. ASD rocks, and I recommend it to any student who comes to Doha.

More About Annotation

Annotation is a conversation the reader has with the text in order to find meaning, to understand purpose, and to gain knowledge.

Color-coding with commentary (thoughts, questions responses) and symbols.

Annotation is a necessary skill to master because you are in partnership with the text.  It is through this method you will show your learning and understanding either orally or through your writing.

Reading, Logging, Annotation

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE YOUR BOOK AND YOUR READING JOURNAL

Today you will have 1/2 hour to read and to journal - during this time I will come around and
take a look at the work you are doing in your journals.  Your goals should include:

Identifying character traits and how their decisions and actions affect the story
and
Identifying major conflicts that drive the story forward.

Be sure to write down QUOTES, write down pages # when interesting events or
conflicts happen and any other evidence you feel is important.

And, DON'T FORGET YOUR THINKING.

WE will also review BASIC ESSAY FORMATTING
AND
Finish annotating the Toxic Worm article INCLUDING a
short written statement about the impact of the text.
So, this is not a summary, it is your thoughts about the
information the text has provided.
