Students are to work for 40 minutes reading their dystopian novel and making entries in their Reading Journals.  Entries can include:
a.      Take out an interesting passage in the book and analyse its meaning
b.      Draw a map of the setting w/landmarks or any other important feature.  Write how the setting impacts/influences/adds to the story
c.      Jot down possible themes that are emerging
d.      Go back and write a brief summary of the chapters you have already read.
e.      Finish this sentence: “I love the way the author. . .  or “I wonder about . . . ‘
f.       Draw a cartoon depicting a MAJOR scene
g.      Write down your quotable quotes and WHY they are quotable

  For the remaining minutes, students can take out their blue analysis sheets for “The Lottery” and fine tune and/or add to their evidence and comments/explanations as to why the evidence is important

Please mention to the students that they will write their analytical essay next week in class.

Have them go to the blog and look at the most recent post, which is a visual organizer of everything the essay must include in the essay and in what order.  These instructions are also on the blog.
